Enter...The Narrative Shack!
First of All: Who the Hell Am I?
My name is Nate Schachter, and I’m a 21-year-old from New York. But, as for why I’m doing all of this, I’m a comic book writer and freelance editor—a Writers of the Future and Negative Space finalist who is following my passion for my formative medium. I have some upcoming things releasing relatively soon, but the point of this Substack is for you to find out about all of that later.
What is The Narrative Shack?
There are two answers to that question:
It is the brand under which I will be putting all of my future independent comic work and writing. Something that will represent quality and my best and most exciting efforts. It’s a smaller, unassuming shack—but what’s inside will, hopefully, show its depth. Like the TARDIS: bigger and cooler on the inside.
I just thought of what names spoke to me the most, what I wanted to identify with—and when those were all seemingly taken after a Google search, this also came to me. My last name is pronounced Shack-ter, and my initials are NS, so I thought it was clever enough.
Why Subscribe?
Look, I know I have no real following—apart from some very supportive friends, family, and people also in the comics industry. I also know I really have no writing credits beyond what’s upcoming. But, those of you who don’t know me already, consider this an investment of sorts. Not of money—I’m not arrogant enough to think I should turn on the paywall for this Substack. No, this is an investment in me as I’m getting my feet wet and making my way into this pursuit.
So watch me go through it all—good, bad, and everything in between! Watch me leave my shack and go out into the big, scary world of comics and try to keep alive and afloat in the face of obstacles it may bring. See what the future holds, the path I walk down—learn from me, root for me, laugh at me. But if I’m going to give something my all, my best effort, I want to be able to gab about it because I’m so excited.
What’ll This Be?
This will be me posting—at least once a week is what I’m aiming for—about myself, my life, my journey, and what I’ve got going on. You’ll get my thoughts on what’s going on in the world—as well as what I’m reading, watching, writing, etc.
I was told to put myself out there more by some people in the industry, but those typical social media platforms just feel so impersonal. If I put myself out there, I want it to be through something I love—writing. So I’m hoping you’ll enjoy reading these newsletters and posts as much as I’ll enjoy writing them.
So let’s see how this goes!
